Frustrated Trump Voter in Ohio: Our Broken Healthcare System Is Still a Mess – And Now GOP Leaders Want to Raid It to Fund a War?

I voted for President Trump because I believed he’d finally deliver real fixes to the disasters both parties have ignored for decades. But this latest news coming out from media such as Axios has me seeing red. Republicans in the House are openly talking about slashing federal health spending – Medicaid cuts, tweaking Obamacare subsidies, cracking down on “fraud” – just to pay for up to $200 billion in Iran war funding and immigration enforcement. House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington and Majority Leader Steve Scalise are floating these “pay-fors” right now, and it feels like the same old Washington game all over again.

We’ve had a broken healthcare system for generations. Sky-high premiums, deductibles that bankrupt families, hospitals, and insurers gaming the system, and doctors buried in paperwork. Obamacare was never the solution – it was a lousy band-aid that made everything worse over time. It forced mandates, drove up costs for everyone who actually pays the bills, and left millions stuck in a system that still doesn’t work. Prices didn’t come down; they exploded. And now, even with Trump back in the White House and Republicans controlling Congress, we’re not getting the full repeal-and-replace we were promised. Instead, they’re looking at offsets that could cut ACA cost-sharing reductions (which the CBO says would drop benchmark premiums 11% but leave 300,000 more people uninsured and raise out-of-pocket costs for others). They’re also eyeing Medicare “site-neutral” payments and cracking down on Medicare Advantage upcoding.

Don’t get me wrong – I support securing the border, going after waste and fraud, and standing strong against Iran. President Trump’s “most favored nation” plan to tie U.S. drug prices to what other countries pay is one of the few ideas that actually makes sense and could finally bring real relief. But raiding healthcare programs to fund everything else while families in places like my city are still getting crushed by insurance bills? That’s not reform. That’s kicking the can down the road again.

I’m a conservative through and through. I want lower costs, more choices, market-driven care, and an end to the Obamacare disaster. But if the GOP’s big plan is more cuts and offsets instead of bold, permanent fixes, then we’re just repeating the same frustrating cycle. Americans didn’t elect us to choose between healthcare and national security – we elected leaders to fix both. Time to deliver, not compromise on the backs of working families.
